Our scientific team

Our scientific core team is constituted by Alimentomica and the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Nutrition and Biotechnology (LBNB) of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), led by Professor Andreu Palou. The LBNB group has a long research career in the which has developed the main theoretical foundations for the development of the technology we use. Prof. Palou is an international reference in the study of the molecular basis of body weight control and the comorbidities of obesity; the interaction of nutrients and bioactive compounds in the regulation of genes; appetite control, energy efficiency and adaptive thermogenesis; the control of preadipocyte proliferation and its differentiation into adipocytes (adipogenesis); the connections between excess adiposity, metabolic complications, genetics, epigenetics and nutrigenomics.

His publications total around 8,300 citations and has an H index of 48 (Web of Science). As an example, his recent publication in which he formulates an index of genetic risk assessment "LGI-Ob" (Low Grade Inflammation-Obesity), is emerging as a very useful tool to predict the risk of systemic inflammation associated with obesity . Its implementation in the context of the algorithms that are proposed (patent pending) in this project will help facilitate the decision-making process to make a better informed diet, according to the individual characteristics.
